Copersucar’s 2022-2024 Sustainability Report includes partner mills’ production in Scope 3 emissions

In its 8th Edition, the Sustainability Report reinforces the commitment of partner mills to the sustainable production of sugarcane and the development of renewable energy solutions and natural food products marketed at scale by Copersucar, contributing effectively to global energy transition and food security.

Key Highlights:

  • Improvement of GHG Emissions Inventory: For the first time, Copersucar’s Inventory now includes Scope 3 emissions related to the production of sugar and ethanol from partner mills.
  • Sustainability in the Field: Practices for soil regeneration, nutrient maintenance, carbon fixation, biological pest control, and precision agriculture as sustainable production processes for sugarcane by partner mills.
  • Social Impact: Expanded vision of Copersucar’s Ecosystem social projects with investments totaling R$ 24 million, benefiting over 300,000 people.
  • Renewable Energy Matrix: Copersucar’s Ecosystem generated 9.6 million CBIOs, equivalent to the reduction of 9.6 million tons of CO2 in the Brazilian energy matrix.
  • Decarbonization of Transport: The volume of ethanol sold prevented the emission of 36.7 million tons of CO2, equivalent to the annual consumption of 18 million gasoline vehicles.
  • Clean Energy: Generation of 8,000 GWh of biomass electricity, equivalent to the annual consumption of a city the size of Paris.
  • Food Security: Sugar marketed worldwide contributes to the nutrition of approximately 525 million people annually in over 70 countries.

Sustainability has been part of Copersucar’s business since its inception, combining the sustainable production of sugarcane from partner mills with the development of renewable energy solutions and natural food products marketed at scale, effectively contributing to global energy transition and food security.

Since 2009, Copersucar has published its Sustainability Report based on the guidelines of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), evolving in its accountability to society regarding the socio-environmental impact of its business, and reinforcing how partner mills sustainably and efficiently produce the products that the company markets globally.

“We have gradually strengthened our sustainability pillars across environmental, social, and governance dimensions with a forward-looking vision and continuous value generation. We are proud to announce that we have further improved the transparency and traceability of our Emissions Inventory information, and for the first time, present an expanded view of our Ecosystem’s social projects,” comments Tomás Manzano, president of Copersucar.

A highlight of this edition of the Report is the inclusion of emissions related to the production of sugar and ethanol from partner mills in the  Scope 3 of  Copersucar’s annual greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions inventory. Since 2015, Copersucar has published its GHG Emissions Inventory in accordance with the guidelines of the Brazilian GHG Protocol Program, submitted to independent external audit and recognized with the Gold Seal in the Public Emissions Reporting (RPE).

The Report also presents for the first time an expanded view of the social investments made by Copersucar and its partner mills. R$ 24 million was invested in approximately 200 initiatives and social programs focused on health, education, and sports, positively impacting over 300,000 people.

Another relevant topic concerns Sustainability in the Field, highlighting sustainable sugarcane production practices by partner mills through actions for soil regeneration, nutrient maintenance, carbon fixation, biological pest control, precision agriculture, and the replacement of synthetic fertilizers with biofertilizers.

Copersucar also reinforces its commitment to RenovaBio and highlights that its business ecosystem generated over 9.6 million CBIOs during the period, representing a reduction of 9.6 million tons of CO2 equivalents in the Brazilian energy matrix. It is also worth noting that the volume of ethanol sold helped prevent the emission of approximately 37 million tons of CO2, comparable to the volume generated by 18 million gasoline vehicles in one year.

The Copersucar business ecosystem generated 8,000 GWh of renewable biomass electricity, equivalent to the consumption of a city the size of Paris, and the sugar marketed contributes to feeding about 525 million people annually in over 70 countries.

“Optimistically, we see promising opportunities ahead, which combined with the potential of the sugar-energy sector for the production of biogas, biomethane, and SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuel), will further strengthen our business model and prepare the ground for new and relevant avenues of growth based on the fantastic circular economy of sugarcane,” concludes Manzano.
