In the year it celebrates 65 years of history, Copersucar launches a new brand expression and reinforces its position as a Brazilian multinational dedicated to bioenergy

With the purpose of “Nurturing and moving the world through the power of the bonding “, the company highlights its contribution to the energy transition and global food security.

São Paulo, October 9, 2024 – To celebrate its 65th anniversary and reinforce its positioning as a global Brazilian multinational dedicated to bioenergy, Copersucar introduces a new brand expression and an inspiring purpose that encapsulates its essence and reinforces its role in contributing to the energy transition and food security: “ Nurturing and moving the world through the power of the bonding.”

“As legitimate representatives of Brazilian producers, our story began 65 years ago with the establishment of the sugar and alcohol producers’ cooperative in São Paulo, which, with strategic vision, entrepreneurial spirit, and great capacity for achievement, has become a broad ecosystem of specialized business with global operations. We can say that Copersucar was a pioneer in developing bioenergy and natural food solutions at scale from Brazil to the world,” explains Tomás Manzano, the company’s president.

Copersucar has transformed into an ecosystem that connects 38 partners mills in Brazil—the largest sugarcane production base in the world—17 corn ethanol distilleries in the United States, as well as an efficient multimodal logistics system in both countries, and a set of specialized invested companies, leaders in their markets, providing renewable energy and natural food to over 70 countries.

As a world leader in ethanol marketing, with more than 15 billion liters per year, Copersucar has a significant presence in Brazil and the United States, the two largest ethanol-producing regions on the planet. The volume of ethanol sold in the 23/24 harvest avoided the emission of 36.7 million tons of CO2 equivalent, equivalent to the annual consumption of approximately 18 million gasoline-powered vehicles. Copersucar is also the largest sugar marketer in the world, with over 12 million tons per year, serving clients in more than 70 countries and contributing to the nutrition of 525 million people. It operates in 337 municipalities in Brazil and generates around 200,000 direct and indirect jobs.

With an efficient multimodal logistics system, the company operates a large-scale port terminal in Santos (SP), two sugar transshipment terminals in inland São Paulo, and 12 distribution terminals in the U.S., including 10 for ethanol, one for natural gas, and one for renewable diesel. It is also a shareholder of Logum, a pipeline system for transporting ethanol, which currently operates around 1,000 km of pipelines.

The new brand expression further reinforces Copersucar’s role as a comprehensive integrated business ecosystem oriented towards the future and the potential of new biofuels like biomethane and SAF (sustainable aviation fuel).

Biomethane can be used for electricity generation, replacing natural gas and diesel, and producing biofertilizers, in addition to helping reduce the carbon intensity of products produced by partners mills (sugar and ethanol). The company believes that biomethane will be the next frontier of bioenergy to decarbonize industry and transportation. “The Copersucar Ecosystem aims to accelerate the development of the biomethane market and stimulate its production by partners mills, which by mid-2032 have the potential to produce about 2 million m³ per day and establish itself as one of the largest production bases in Brazil,” explains Manzano.

With large scale and low carbon intensity, ethanol produced in Brazil is expected to significantly contribute to the evolution of the sustainable aviation fuel market, opening a promising avenue for business growth in the future. Additionally, Copersucar recently announced plans to develop technology for producing SAF from biomethane in partnership with Geo, intending to build a pilot demonstration plant expected to begin operations in 2025. “We believe it makes sense to produce SAF in Brazil, and that’s why we are investing to develop a new technological route for producing this fuel from biomethane,” says Manzano.

This year, Copersucar has also expanded its business portfolio and has begun marketing electricity focused on the Brazilian free market through the acquisition of 50% of NewCom, a trading company previously controlled by Comerc, which will double its market offering with the volume of renewable energy produced by Copersucar’s partners mills.

“We are living a moment full of opportunities. With this new brand expression, we also want to reinforce our commitment to supporting Brazil as a hub for the expansion of natural food and bioenergy supply,” concludes Manzano.
